I have never lived outside of Puerto Rico, still from my early teens I have successfully avoided local TV by restricting my viewing of it only when I know beforehand that I must not miss this or that special programing or if I need some info on the weather. Even at doctors offices or waiting at Western Auto I will not watch it, I would rather read TV-Guia than look up to local TV offering. Not that I am not a TV addict – I am. You know you are too if you turn your set on within 5 minutes of getting home or waking up. Nevertheless, being addict to cable tv is different, kind like the difference between a choco-addict that craves tootsie rolls or kisses and the one that craves Hagen Das, Lindt Lindor or Ghirardelli.
In recent years I’ve kicked it up a knotch by trying to watch more instructional TV and now that I have Dish Network I am happier than ever. For less money than less reliable Choice TV I get more channels and more importantly more geek channels. Link, Free Speech TV (FSTV), Colors, CCTV and various university networks are available in the 9,000 channels. Free Speech TV broadcasts an excellent news program- Democracy Now (with Amy Goodman), other great documentaries and programs and also GAY USA with Andy Humm, and Ann Northrop.

Another thing about our new satellite service is that it came with a DVR that is really a breeze to program for recording. So now I have more geeky options to waste my time on front of the tube and that is making my semester an uphill battle.
